Overseas Teachers
There are special regulations that apply to people from Overseas who wish to teach in England and Wales. Anyone wishing to work as a qualified teacher in England must have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). If you qualified overseas, you can work as a ‘temporary teacher’ for up to four years without QTS.

For further information on teaching in the UK please select one of the applicable flags of your origin below.

Whether or not you can work in the UK depends on three main factors:
• your qualifications - a graduate teaching qualification and some experience is usually
sufficient for casual ‘supply’ work. European Union (EU) qualified teachers are accepted
automatically and can work anywhere in the EU
• the type of job you want - casual work paid by the day (supply teaching) is subject to
fewer restrictions than fixed term or permanent employment
• your nationality – priority in employment rights is given first to European Economic Area
(EEA) nationals and British dual nationality, followed by certain categories of
   Commonwealth citizens.

You have priority if:
• you are an EEA citizen - you have the same right to seek work in the UK as British citizens
• you have British dual nationality, are a Commonwealth citizen with a British parent or
grandparent, or are married to a British citizen
• you are married to or directly descended from EU nationals – you also have certain rights
to work but they may be limited
• you are a Commonwealth citizen

Everyone else needs a work permit, which must be obtained by your employer before you come to the UK. Your employer must recruit you while you are still in your home country and must have been unable to find an EEA national to do the job. Work permits are not issued for casual work.
